Hi,

I have installed Ubuntu "jaunty jackalope" 9.04 on the second hard drive on my shiny new build budget PC (£270 for the tower including fans etc). I have been playing around with it for a couple of weeks and like it very much, apart from the joy of getting the ATI driver to work on my too-new HD4650 (everyone has fun with that from what I've read), it has been a fun and much faster experience. I took a while to get used to the method of installation, - python 2.6.2 took a couple of tries.

One thing I tried was just slinging a DVD film into the DVD drive to see if it would work. The default movie player tried to download updates to play it but failed. I then tried VLC media player, but this also surrendered without success.

I have read that this is a current issue on 9.04 due to issues with proprietary codecs etc, but what I don't get is that apparently this issue does not exist for version 8.04... so they decided to fix it???

Does anyone know a work-around or a different program to install that might work? Please include any command-line stuff I need, I'm still getting the hang of the new commands. Thanks.

p.s. thanks to forquare1 for redirecting me here from the broken PC Pro website!

Hey, good to see you over here :D

I'm not an Ubuntu user, but after having a wee look I reckon this page could be worth a look

Hope that helps :)
