I am jealous after seeing a desktop in Gavomatic's thread here that looks like that. Image

I want one of those
I am downloading Ubuntu 9.06 ( who says torrents are just for pirates? ) as we speak (or as I type?) so how do I change the ugly *ss desktop to something that is easy on the eye?

Will it work on under VMware too? I run desktop (actually I set one up for my mum runing Ubuntu so she can't break it ;) ) and also virtual PC ( I love Vista, so shoot me)?

That theme in my screenshot is included with 9.04 - It's called New Wave.

The only tweak I have made to it is added the system monitor applet by right clicking on the top menu and "add to panel", then add system monitor. Oh, I also added the weather one too.

I use the Ubuntu Satanic Edition clicky.

There's a few options with it for desktops, screensavers etc, and I kinda like it. :D

Good call, I never knew this feature was there.

I had a go at beryl but gave up, I will try again when I have more time.

Beryl? I thought that was long gone - it's Compiz Fusion now. It's on by default in Ubuntu 9.04 - in medium mode - there is a more extreme setting in "Appearance".

I've turned it all off, it's nice but a little pointless.

You can tell I am little bit behind with linux. I thought that Beryl and Compiz are the same thing. I ran beryl under Suse about 3-4 years ago when I tried to switch to linux entirely. Didn't last long, I was back to XP in no time. Now I use VMware for safe browsing, banks etc..

Under VMware it won't let me turn on medium visual effect, I will install 9.04 on a separate drive to see what Compiz is like. And while I'm at it I will have a go at Windows 7 RC too...

Did a new install last night
straight forward less than 20mins to reboot

updated today and it installed the ati driver

back to black screen

no load did some homework on the Ubuntu forums
in the end found a fix
which was sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx
whiched worked

now doing this in lixux

MUST not d/l the ati driver bloody great problems with them

Had a similar problem with my laptop during the beta - graphics would fail if you did an upgrade install (x1400 mobile). I have to be honest, the ATI drivers are shocking. My desktop with the GTX 260 is running perfectly - playing Prey, Quake4 etc with good framerates and no jerkyness.

I love the look of it but it comes with too much stuff that I don't need. Is it possible to get the theme only?

Quote:
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-look

or

Quote:
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-theme ubuntustudio-icon-theme ubuntustudio-wallpapers

if you just want the theme, icons and wallpapers.
