Post HOWTO: Use IRC
Here's a very quick rundown on how to use Internet Relay chat

THE EASY WAY:

  1. Point your browser to the >> Freenode Webchat Client <<

    • Complete the Captcha
    • Nickname - enter your desired nickname. You probably want to register it (see below)
    • Channels - #x404

  3. Click connect

I am using Konversation in openSUSE 11.3 to connect to the x404 channel

First you need to teach your IRC client how to connect to the x404 channel on Freenode.

  1. You need to find your server list. For me it's under File >> Server List
  2. Make a new entry as follows:

    • Network Name - X404 or whatever you like
    • Server Name - irc.freenode.org
    • Join Channels - #x404
    • Identity - You may wish to change this to your desired nickname

  3. Once you've done that, click Connect

    You should get a load of sh!te that looks like this:

You now need to teach the server about who you are.

  1. You then need to change your nickname to what you want

    Type /nick YourNick

    You should then see
    Code:
    *** You are now known as YourNick.


    You are ready to use IRC. However...

  2. ...you should now register your nickname to yourself to stop someone else squatting with it.

    Type /msg nickserv register <password> <email-address>

    E.g. if your password is fart1234 and your email is sprogtasticmugglemonster@doh.com, you would type /msg nickserv register fart1234 sprogtasticmugglemonster@doh.com

    You should then see:
    Code:
    [07:28] [Notice] -NickServ- An email containing nickname activation instructions has been sent to sprogtasticmugglemonster@doh.com
    [07:28] [Notice] -NickServ- If you do not complete registration within one day, your nickname will expire.

  3. In your email you should get a message from the Freenode autoserver something like this:

    Quote:
    rustybucket,

    In order to complete your registration, you must send the following
    command on IRC:
    /msg NickServ VERIFY REGISTER rustybucket qeapwlucfiwl

    Thank you for registering your nickname on the freenode IRC network!

    Thank you for your interest in the freenode IRC network.


    Type the command exactly as it is in your email into your IRC client

    You should then see:

    Code:
    [07:30] [Notice] -NickServ- rustybucket has now been verified.
    [07:30] [Notice] -NickServ- Thank you for verifying your e-mail address! You have taken steps in ensuring that your registrations are not exploited.
