Little sis wanted a TV/DVD combi as a present. The reviews were horrendous with people saying the DVD bit would stop working and the entire thing would need to be replaced. Hence we bought her a 22" LCD TV and decided to buy the DVD player later with some DVDs.
Had some time to kill so went to a local retail park. There were some blu-ray players for less than £100 but I've no experience (use PS3) so wondered if you guys had ideas, recommendations or opinions on the following:
Philips BDP3000 Samsung BD-C5300 Samsung CD-C5500 LG BD550 Sony BDP-S185 Philips BDP3280 Samsung BD-D5300 LG BD650 Toshiba BDX-1250 Panasonic DMP-BD75 Toshiba BDX-2250
She has a subscription to LoveFiLM so she watches a fair few DVDs. Should I try these blu-ray players or stick to a cheapo DVD-player with upscaling?

You can get a BD player £60 these days - the cost of a couple of films. No idea about quality though - I'm still waiting for the disks to become a sensible price, which may never happen...

I ended up going with the Panasonic DMP-BD75. The others had too many negative reviews or issues, and some of the "best" ones are a year old and unavailable.

Late to the thread but it might be worth mentioning for anyone else who wants one; the Sony BDP-S360 was rated highly a couple of years back and so was its replacement (BDP-S370). The BDP-S380 is the current model and available for under £100.

I looked at the Sony range. The older model had lots of features and support but was difficult to get hold of. The newer one had more restricted features and playback support.

They'll drop as soon as the next format comes out.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I don't think prices are too bad, e.g. Warrior is £9.99 to preorder on DVD or £13.99 on BD. Plus the older BD movies can be had for as little as a fiver now.

HD is currently next to pointless for me - the average film isn't worth watching never mind buying these days, HD tends to make actors look a bit 'hyper-real' with some films IMO, it really shows up crappy CGI, and older films need to have had a lot of work done to them for it to be worthwhile it seems Also, watching them on a PS3 isn't ideal for any number of reasons...
