I am using Olympus Studio 2 (will work with anything), you could call it 'thinking mans Lightroom' but maybe you wouldn't want to if you didn't want to, it has the 'Lightbox' feature for before and after.

A good free Raw converter is Raw Therapy.

Also have CS4 Extended PS and programme called Photo Mechanic used as a browser / info mangler, only use Bridge for importing really.

Was discussing the image editing software thing with a friend today and thought I would add, what he said, and he is basically a wedding and family portrait photographer, not that fancy, but a decent one with a long list of happy customers.

He said before you throw cash down on imagine software, use that cash to get a decent display, and calibrate it, so borrow or buy the device to do it. He said he goes on forums and sees people listing off all the fancy cameras they own, and then they list their computer and they have a £150 Samsung TN or a glossy Macbook (his words not mine) or something else, ultimately the weakest link in the chain.

His Macbook comments are based upon this I believe, though he did say they aren't all bad, just the later ones it seems :

One thing I don't like about the GIMP is the lack of decent colour management. In fact I don't like that about Linux in general. CMS is a PITA.

When it comes to cataloguing though, I haven't found anything I like. LR sounds good.

Very clever. Although I preferred the motorbike photo when it was distorted!

I do have a tiny fear about this; Adobe started out with Photoshop which was just a very simple to use image editing application, and now it's a total bloatware that has stuff in it that the 'average' user will never likely need or use.
I hope Adobe doesn't start doing this with Lr.

Much of the bloat that comes with Photoshop is nothing to do with photography and more to do with general image manipulation. The tweaks we are seeing in Lightroom all seem to be explicitly related to digital photography - there are no 'painting' tools, no text overlay tools (with the exception of the watermark feature) and no concept of layers. I think it's good that they are adding stuff like this, all the while it's concentrated on the specifically narrow remit of Lightroom as something to organise, process, present and export digital photographs.

All my photos are taken in RAW (the compact camera being the exception) so I absolutely need to develop them digitally. This is a) got nothing to do with fixing mistakes and b) no different to what one might do with chemicals and paper

Of course you get the flexability to improve the image if desired. Given my cameras known quirk to underexpose by around a stop (especially if I keep the reins on ISO) using Lr, Camera RAW or any other such program becomes part of the process of taking a photo in my digital environment. That doesnt mean its not preferable to get it right in camera, just that the process doesnt have to end when you release the shutter.
