Quite like that pic of yours Jim but my goodness it makes the case against Pollarded trees My eye is drawn to the tree in the centre with its upper branches trimmed - I would rather have seen it cut down fully and replanted. /rant over.

Same here. My guess is that, it being a 13th century church and graveyard, they were perhaps a bit scaredy of dropping the thing and collapsing a grave. Either that or it's got a TPO on it and they CBA to get it lifted.
I'll ask the wardens this week and see what I can turn up.

I don't like sticking a TPO on individual trees and even less so on areas of trees (zero budget). I reckon in this instance it's a cost thing but it could be TPO'd and the cooncil man was flexing his muscles by not allowing complete removal.
Best chance of a tree job is to get one with an Aboriculturalist - physical stuff but plenty of work. Get yourself on a couple of courses - 'safety' and 'how to cut down/trim/pollard trees', then you can get a job anytime. Not so much work in the winter though.
Councils are looking at cutting posts not creating them. Lands and parks departments have to make 25% savings across the board so those who don't get the boot get increased workload.
