Well, it would appear that the wife has decided I should get a new camera My immediate thoughts were the 7D or 5D MkII (will stick to Canon due to 3 existing lenses). I might just scrape in a new lens as well - in for a penny and all that? So Heather - how's that 7D coming along? Any problems (like focus issues or back/front focussing)? Unfortunately I'm not authorised to get a 300mm F/2.8 prime so might look at the new 70-200 F/2.8 but can't quite choose whether to get the IS version or not. 1.4x convertor has to be standard but can't use it with my 100-400 . Other options are 300mm F/4 or the 400mm F5.6 (again with convertor).? So, what camera and lens do you suggest? Over to you...... Al

Full frame, or are you limited with your current lenses?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Sweet! The 7D is fab. No issues beyond operator error that I can see. I thought my cheapie Sigma 28-300 might have had a focus issue, but it was just me being in numpty mode, trying to use too many of the 19 AF points at once. I'd say, if you can swing it and all of your lenses are full frame compatibale (a lot of mine aren't yet), then go for the 5D if you can. Mr Miners has one, and seems to take some reasonable shots with his. The rumour mills are claiming a 5D MkIII isn't too far away, but what with the goings on in Japan right now that might be delayed a bit longer. The same rumour mills are muttering about a 7D MkII. I'm very happy with the new camera. It's taken me a while to learn my way around it, which has required the purchase of a decent book to supplement the Canon manual, but I think it has a long and fruitful career ahead of it in my hands.

Very pertinent question as the 7D is crop but the 5D MkII is full. If the latter was really considered then I suspect the existing lenses would all be compatible. Still, would be good to know. (8+) Mark

Just for clarity, Nick has a 5D MkII, but you knew that, right? (8+) Mark

I did, yes. I sort of assumed the full model name wasn't really necessary in this instance.

Well, could the 5D not also be an option? I thought so. Al? Mark

I thought I was the pedantic one. The 5D hasn't been in production for nearly three years now? It still comes up second-hand, I'll give you that, but one generally assumes 5D MkII in conversation, especially if it was referred to in the OP.

The 5D2 is top of my list. My main lens (100-400) is compatible as is the 17-85mm. My 28-135 is an EF mount as well so I think it's ok but not sure. Any of the 'wish list' lenses are ok and if I get the 70-200 then I'll sell the 28-135 anyway.
My only niggle is the 3.9fps of the 5D as opposed to 8 from the 7D. Focus is slower too. So we're talking about 3 Mega Pixels/slower focus/fps and almost £500 of a difference in price. Bear in mind that my main photography genre is aviation and you can see why the 7D would suit better.
Oh, and I do like close-up shots.

EF mounts would be fine on the 5D [MkII] - it's anything designed for the APS-C cameras that aren't, so EF-S and whatever Sigma/Tokina/Tamron use to signify their lenses.
Sounds like the 7D would be better for you. The multi-shot drive is scary the first time you fire off 15 frames in a couple of seconds!
