I have been to the RIAT airshow this weekend and took around 2,400 photographs over the course of three days (two at the airbase) On several occasions- around 6 or 7 times- the mirror on my EOS 40D seemed to stick up. It was as though I was taking a half-second exposure but the shutter speed was 1/1000 of a second and the shutter speed doesn't appear to have been affected. Should I be concerned? The camera is only just over a month old and it has taken over 3,000 photos in total which I realise is one hell of a lot- but more about the massive use this weekend in another thread coming soon. |

I'd be concerned - check the internet for other reports of the same problem. Also check Canon's website in case it's a known problem. |

Yeah, get it seen to! It shouldn't be sticking already - maybe when you are into the tens of thousands of exposures, but not yet! |

I had a Canon 20D for years and took 1000s of photos and the mirror never seemed to stick also the new 50D I've recently got the mirror hasn't stuck. If it's only about a month old I'd be contacting the place where I got and asking for a replacement. Oooo, my first post, Hello everyone ![]() |

There are problems with some 40D's with the mirror sticking up. If it's an intermittent fault then check when it happens again for the dreaded 'Error 99' message. Unfortunately it could be the mirror box or shutter mechanism. If it's still under warranty then get it fixed. Al |

Looking back at some pics I picked up today (see other thread) it's apparent that I have a body with a sticking shutter. Arse. |

Thanks, all. I can't believe it- my fifth Canon camera to have problems. I knew that I should have gone Nikon. ![]() |

I think it's just you. You must have the wrong DNA or something. Obviously, Nature intended you to be a Nikon shooter. ![]() |

There is no denying that Canon is a popular SLR make. Canon outnumbered Nikon by a huge amount at the airshow this weekend and I'm not just talking about stupid people like me that don't know better, I include those with both mid and high-end cameras including at least one EOS1D that I am pretty sure that I saw. There were people with tripod setups that probably cost as much as my camera and they were using Canon, and lenses (that may have been hired) worth thousands of pounds, nearly all attached to Canon cameras. There must be something in it and my poor experiences does seem to be an exception. Even my local camera shop that repaired my EOS300D said that they don't get a lot of Canon cameras in. Perhaps my DNA is bad for Canon cameras, but good for swine 'flu. That should be a good thing, but I should only get 'flu for a week and I'm stuck with Canon so long as I am not prepared to sell my entire outfit and start again. ![]() |
