The Wench's camera has died and she's on the lookout for a reasonable compact camera for about £250. Anyone like to make any suggestions?

Panasonic TZ range.

Commissioner Gordon got a TZ7, and it's a stonkingly good little camera. Good optics, good optical zoom, big screen, no optical viewfinder, lots of manual controls if you want them.

Can't recommend it enough.

Another good one is the Canon PowerShot S90. Might be a tad over-budget, though.

TZ6/7 are very good. If you want something almost as nice but a little slimmer then the Lumix FX60 is also very good. In fact I'm thinking about this one for the missus as her cheap Samsung is crap in low light.

With regards to low light the Sony Exmoor CMOS sensor is sold as being just the ticket - by Sonys marketing team anyway! I've never used on myself but its something I'm looking into (for the same reason above).

Others I've looked at recently are:
Ricoh Caplio CX1 - got a fancy system for low light situations
Finepix F70EXR/F200EXR - Fujifilm's trick new SuperCCD sensor technology

...and the Canon Ixus always seem to do well at a chosen price point too.

I've got the TZ5 and it's really quite good for an P+S. It can also record HD video.

+1 for the Panasonic Lumix TZ7, I love that camera - it's superb I can't fault it.

I might very well be wrong as you own the camera :p but I thought they didnt get HD video until the TZ7?

If anyone is interested in the TZ models it might be worth a look at the TZ65 depending on pricing of TZ6 and 7's at others stores. The 65 is basically a TZ6 with the bigger screen from the TZ7 (or you might say the TZ7 without the HD movie mode?) but only on sale at PC World / Dixons / Currys.

Im so confused. The Panasonic website only shows the TZ7 as supporting 1280x720 recording with the 'lesser' models having 836xsomethingorother. Oh well.

I'm confused too. HD Video was the sole reason I bought the TZ7 over the TZ6. :?
