IMO the beeb should aim for quality programming and not viewing figures. Big names may draw viewers but the BBC is in a unique position where they don't have to be concerned with this. Just think what could be done with the money they could and have saved from Jonathon Ross et al. The only problem would be that Joe Public would complain even more about the TV Tax.

Is iPlayer really necessary when so many people have access to many types of video recorder?

Old granny doesn't have to pay for a TV licence, and that is probably a ploy by the government to get people to care for their elderly family because the household is exempt from a licence, and therefore saves the government plenty from social security.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Ask the thousands (if not millions) of people who use it daily. For me, the iPlayer has replaced the need to record things.

For instance:

  • The whole branding and on-screen decals are loud and terrible. Go away and try again
  • BBC.co.uk really needs a revamp - there are too many images and the low graphics version is terrible
  • Their servers are terribly slow
  • BBC2 should be much more a documentary, educational and factual programming channel
  • The history programmes are great - more please.
  • The "reality" TV needs to disappear
  • The celebrity items need to disappear
  • The Home & Holiday porn need to go
  • The sports coverage needs to improve - there are sports other than men's football and snooker
  • BBC2 shouldn't be cordoned off every time something sporty happens - maybe a dedicated channel?
  • More political programming please - especially during prime time
  • Question Time needs to be longer and speakers need to be made to answer the question
  • Most films shown should not be mainstream but rather fringe or foreign-language. Shorts should feature as well
  • Shoot Andrew Marr
  • A bit of theatre would be nice
  • Stop showing soaps. No seriously, stop it. That's what ITV is for.
  • Sack the expensive names - they only ever detract from the content.
  • Hire some decent engineers. It's really galling that I (an electronics engineer) can't get a job when I see some of the atrocious mixing on the Beeb
  • Auntie really needs to consider whether having big centres in the middle of big cities actually provides any benefit. There must be better, cheaper, more spacious buildings in the suburbs
  • Their science and technology reporting is terrible. Either do it right or don't do it at all
  • BBC HD is great - more please
  • BBC Parliament is superb

Reality TV is cheap as is holiday and property porn. Actually property porn is a symptom of the national obsession with house prices.

Question Time should be longer. I would also like any politician barred if they fail to answer questions. Jeremy Paxman nailed Michael Howard and the BBC need more like that. No political party should get an easy ride at the BBC.

Theatre and opera would suit BBC4 or BBC 2.

I hate soaps but will admit that without Eastenders many would complain about the BBC not being for them.

Science and Technology reporting has been dumbed down. Channel 4 do some great stuff. The BBC do have some great documentaries.

I would like a film theme night on BBC2 like they used to have. I am quite happy with old thirties horror films. Stuff that the other channels avoid. They could have theme so can change genres and decades. I doubt that the old Lon Chaney or Bela Lugosi films would cost a lot to broadcast.

I will not comment on sports as I do not watch it. Though the cost demanded by the FA precludes many possibilities without legislation.

I would agree on getting rid of the expensive names. I thought that Jonathan Ross was more interested in his own ego that that of his guests. I found Graham Norton a better chat show host. Maybe having a salary cap across the network, including board members and executives. Find new cheap talent. Ant and Dec cant do everything for ITV!

it should refund any surplus to the government and freeze the license fee.

There shouldn't ever be any surplus - any unspent money should be spent on buildings and equipment. God knows they have to drop their TV bandwidth often enough and the website could do with a speed boost

Actually I forgot about that component so yes it should upgrade its buildings and servers etc. Though how much will go to boost the boards wages?

I was asking if they needed it, rather than used it.

I actually like the BBC. I think they put some great stuff out both from home and abroad. Some of their wildlife documentary stuff is nop notch too. I hate being 'forced' to pay something but for what I get in return I dont mind.
