For me BR just isn't enough of a jump over DVD to be worth the hassle, but there's no way Joe Average in the UK is gonna be streaming or downloading HD films any time soon for all sorts of reasons... It sounds like the BR discs have proved useful with games though :?

IIRC Final Fantasy XII (or is it XIII?) is the only game so far that's had a significant benefit from being on BluRay on the PS3 compared to DVD on the 360. Given the FF games have always been CGI fests I think that makes them a little of a special case. There are few games out or on the horizon that look like they'd need more than a DVD's worth of space, assuming you can now specify a HDD as a requirement on a 360 game to uncompress stuff as you go to.

However I would say this : I've seem Bluray and downloaded HD movies on the same TV and the BluRay is definitely still better. Even with a decent download HD movie, the bitrate simply isn't near what you can get off a BluRay, nor can you get (for example) 7.1 sound. It may well be that until we really do have ubiquitous high speed broadband, download movies will be 'good enough' whereas BluRay will be the choice if you want the absolute best quality.

We'll see Blu Ray in the next Xbox in five years or so/ There's no need to change the current one.

God of War 3 is another game that benefited from BR apparently. It's the sort of thing that'll eventually gather steam with the hardcore gamers, which I'm not I have to say :)

Content can be put on multiple discs and transfered to the HDD if neccessary I guess.

This.

Blu ray is EPICLY slower than DVD for data seek/read/transfer on the consoles, which is why pretty much every Blu Ray PS3 game requires an install to the hard drive. GOW3 might not use it..... but it will no doubt have loading screens longer than a minute

The issue with FF13 is that it's designed as a PS3 game, not 360, the 360 version is seriously hobbled already (apparently missing content, 576i instead of 720p, no install disc etc), it's designed for the PS3 first and this shows. It just sucks that there is so much FMV in it, lost odyssey is 4 discs (onto disc 4 now) and is very similar but it seems that the fmv is rendered in game

Strangely enough it tends to be the better programmed games - Uncharted 2 is the obvious example - that don't and the badly programmed ones - like say the PS3 version of Bayonetta - that do. However in any case, given every PS3 has a hard drive and it's relatively easy to upgrade if you're running out of space, I really don't see it as being that big a drawback to be honest with you. Especially if, like me, you've got an early xbox 360 in which the DVD drive sounds like a Harrier taking off. Hard disk installs are pretty much mandatory for me on the 360 too...

Better programmed != First party titles. Naughty Dog would have a LOT more support than even someone like 2K games would get.

There is also the issue that they might have legitimate reasons for needing the install, speed of texture loading could be a simple one

I have installed some games to my HDD on my 360, but only the regular ones, but the improvement on speed + sound is worth it, especially on Lost Odyssey
