speed cameras are not prevention, they're only finance related.

To make people slow down you just design the road so they have no other choice. especially in town. You can use trees and bushes to block vision until intersections, paint, parking spaces and people will feel obliged to slow down.

Get rid of road markings as well. That slows traffic down as well. Then they could actually use those signs that actually flash up "Slow" when you are going too fast. They are considerably cheaper and actually more effective. Though they raise no money.

Back home there's a village like that. It works.

Signs of shame, my driving instructor used to refer to them as.

The "Signs of Shame" are actually much more effective than the cameras, and considerably cheaper. Though I doubt that they will replace cameras because too many have been put up and to backtrack will be an admission of the real reason that they were installed. Most street calming measures, I will not include speed bumps because they damage vehicles, are actually cheaper than speed cameras.

Hmm, not convinced on that. Mostly because every time I've been in a vehicle going through one (I don't drive myself), it's been below the speed limit and it's still flashed, which if anything seems to invoke ire on the part of the driver, rather than encourage adherence to the law.

Why should motorists get angry? They are just getting a warning not a ticket. There is one along Brighton seafront, which is a dual carriageway but still people go at 40 and not 30 because they think it is a faster road, and ignore the fact that it is in a built up area.

Because a sign that tells you to slow down when you are doing the speed limit or less is just plain stupid.

The sign only flashes when you exceed the limit.

Maybe we just find ones that are broken, but both the cars speedometer and the Sat-Nav's speedometer show the car to be under the speed limit at that time.

Maybe your friends have broken them? ;)
