Des may be looking to shift some cash around or something - he's got a hefty sexual harrassment case aganst him ;)

I'd happily see him buy The Sun; at least it would dent Murdoch's little empire a bit :)

Maybe he just wants to watch it burn - that would be worth it for a lot of people if they could afford it ;)

Watch what burn? His £1billion? Who, in their right mind, would spend a billion pounds on something just to watch it burn?!?

Mark

Have you seen the hatred for The Sun 'newspaper' on this forum alone? If you had a billion to spare, and if it was your rival... I'm just light-heartedly saying the thought might be there ;)

Nah, not for me. My life could be quite a happy one with a billion to spare and I'd not give that news rag a second thought.

Only for the bad press (ironically), if I had Bill Gates/Sultan of Brunei etc kinds of money where it didn't really matter, I'd add destroying The Sun to near the bottom of my 'to do' list I think - just in case I ever got to that point. Or, you know, on a whim one day

Odds are that this will be a highly leveraged buyout. Though the cost might be high, and it depends on how much Murdoch needs the cash. I thought that Sky was a generating loads of cash in tax havens so no need to worry about it, unless he is looking at buying MGM, he will need around $5 billion for that.

I'd be amazed if this actually happened - for one thing, I doubt Murdoch spent so long 'influencing' Gordon and now Dave just to walk away from it all at this juncture...

Though his son is incompetent and a liability ;)

Also Murdoch will not want to lose influence over the government.

However, Mr Desmond has proven that it is possible to sell more papers and he believes his Daily Star will soon overtake the Daily Mirror in terms of readers.

He also owns the Express, which I understand has suffered a catastrophic decline in circulation... hopefully this is the achievement he will recreate if Murdoch allows him to buy the Sun.

He also owns the Star which is the favourite to close. Rumours of its closing have been around since the beginning of the year.
