Ministers have played down a report that they may drastically reduce the drink-drive limit for motorists.

Government adviser Sir Peter North has submitted a report on the issue to the Department for Transport.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Sir Peter recommends cutting the drink-drive limit from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

I am surprised they did not recommend going even lower to 35mg per 100ml of blood.

Forget dropping the limit, they should do more to catch people who exceed the current one.

Zero tolerance in my book. Had a drink? Don't drive. End of.

I have a one clear day between drinking and driving rule. It means that I have never failed a breath test. In Norway they get motorists the following morning still over the limit. I am fin favour of a much lower limit but lets see them actually enforce it.

Yup.

People have differnet physiological reactions to alcholol so I'm not entirely sure how an arbitrary measurement is useful.

They need to clamp down hand held phone users too. I see that several times a day. Studies have shown (both government and Myth Buster) that that's just as dangerous as drink driving.

Not so easy to hit your targets with though, detection work is required.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Granted but actually bring a greater benefit to the population.

How about scrapping all CCTV that has no significant effect on crime prevention and spend that money on PCs who can go back on the beat and act as prevention as well as being able to respond to crime actively, rather than passively like a camera?

I think that we all want actual police on the streets doing actual crime detection and prevention. Though considering how few police cars I see on the roads nowadays they could have a zero limit and they will still not reduce the numbers driving illegally. They should also be going for those who use their mobiles on the road.

It would get my vote.
