More than three guide dogs a month 'attacked by dogs'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10345934.stm

Quote:
More than three guide dogs on average are attacked by other dogs every month in the UK, a report says.

A review of 100 such incidents published in Veterinary Record found that nearly two thirds of the attacking dogs were off their lead at the time.

Either owners or members of the public were injured in a fifth of the attacks.

The authors warn that guide dogs can be so traumatised by an attack that they are unable to work. There are about 4,500 working guide dogs in the UK.

They should fine the attacking owners dogs so much that it rapidly stops such attacks because of the financial implications to the owner. Plus make them legal responsible to pay for the training of a new guide dog (£50 000) as well. If people could lose their homes because of this it would stop the attacks.

And how many normal dogs are attacked every month by other dogs? Our dog has been bitten 4 or 5 times in the last 2 years by other dogs, whose owners haven't been able to control them...

I agree, but bad owners create bad dogs. Our last dog was very placid and got attacked by another dog, but it was deaf at the time and could not hear the other one growling. Owners need to be aware of these things.

probably a controversial point of view but dogs that have a track record of attacking other dogs / people should be put down ........ end of.

I agree Alun. After the first attack, the dog/owner should have to go on a training course.

If it continues, the dog should be put down.
