As I've said elsewhere, this is one of the most frakkin stupid ideas ever.

I don't know enough about the scheme to pass comment, but from what I have seen it does seem rather bizarre.

It seems like they rejected it but considering Margaret Thatcher took away the school milk, maybe this generation of Tories decided that they need to show how callous they are. The Libs probably shot that one down.

Ignoring the school meals bit, I think that this scheme is another failure in the making. All it will do is get disgruntled teachers from schools leaving to set up their own schools. They get preferential funding to get them started with the funds coming from other schools. It is like trying to create a market for new schools, shop around there will be another school along soon enough. How will these schools select their pupils? If it is by selection then the remaining schools by the nature of statistics will fall down the tables meaning that others will create new schools etc.

And where does the money come to pick up failing schools, probably the budget for schooling for mainstream schools.
For frak's sake, just make a mainstream school system that people happily send their kids to.

That is all parents want. The majority want their kids to be happy and to do well, and to go to school near them, not across the city. Scrap league tables and get parents involved in the local schools if necessary.
