My thoughts on first hearing this - 'It prints the words "Its in your hand you idiot" on the screen...'
Then you realised it could be used on the iPad to find a lost iPhone, right?

Mark

Because neither has Safari installed?

I have had this since I bought my iPhone, but I can do it from the nearest internet connected device I find, once I realise that my iPhone is missing...

Lol that looks horribly accurate, I can only assume that's a GPS find, which won't work if the phone's indoors.

I've just done a non-GPS location search on my phone, and it reported the location with an accuracy "to within 3100 metres" - in other words, useless. The centre of the circle was over a mile from the phone's true location.

That really does depend where you are though.

If you are in a large town/city it can be surprisingly accurate. I believe it uses known wi-fi networks as well as triangulation to approximate it's position??

They're probably using the mobile base stations to triangulate position - an app I had on a Nokia phone in 2002.

So 8 years ago you were able to log onto a web page and get it to tell you where in the world your phone was?

Of course.

Come on Oli, the iPhone is crap - it hasn't got any new technology, and is lacking features that my Nokia/Sony phone had 5 years ago.

Not quite.

The app I had would tell you where you where in relation to the nearest masts. This new app simply displays it on a web page for remote viewing as far as I can tell.

Don't forget the "find my iPhone" thing is designed for (a) locating a device if you left it somewhere, (b) remotely locking it down so it can't be tampered with while you go fetch it, (c) remotely posting a message to anyone who finds it that you're on your way to fetch it (even when locked), and (d) remotely wiping all data and returning the device to factory settings (in case you're never likely to retrieve it).

That seems to me to be a whole lot more than just showing its location on a map. *shrug*

I can imagine it been useful. Keep all your drugs with your iPhone and then use the Find My Stash app. ;)

That looks like the feature set from Windows "My Phone" and similar for Android. Maybe Apple made it free because their current service was paid and the others are free.

As an example of what I can do (and the accuracy) with Wifi turned off on my phone (only the standard gps and in standby) this is how accurate it was (clicky):

Image

Other features include:
Ring your phone
Your phone will ring loudly for 60 seconds even if it is set to 'silent' or 'vibrate only' mode.

Lock your phone
Lock your phone so that it cannot be used by anyone else. You can also enter a message to display on your phone's screen to tell the finder how to contact you.

Erase your phone
Erase your phone and storage card to ensure that your data is safe. Your phone will be restored to the factory default settings

Seems like apple have caught up with the mobile side also and making it free
