Most supermarkets banned trans-fats in own brand products quite a few years ago. These days, about the only thing you find them in is instant whip.

One side effect of this move away from artificial hard fats is the increased dependence of industry on naturally hard fats such as palm oils, which are typically hidden on the ingredients as "vegetable oils". Palm oil is bad from an environmental and social perspective, as well as a health one. However, it's cheaper than alternatives such as dairy or coconut.

Every time you use margarine, a rhino dies.

Really? I would be very surprised if 3 rhinos a day died just because of me.... In fact, If this was the case, I suspect they would have been extinct years ago. :|

Actually I would have thought it was Orang-utans that were mainly at risk from Palm oil plantations.

Indeed.

That's frakked up when you see the Rainforest Alliance backing things like Kit-Kat because of the "green" cocoa production and slapping their logo on it. They seem to turn a blind eye to the palm oil in it even when they could get palm oil from other sustainable sources.

So Joe Bloggs is 'Yay, it has the Rainforest Alliance logo on it, it must be good'. No, you're killing Orang-utans.

I am avoiding palm oil from all sources because of the clearing of rain forests. I prefer to use walnut and olive oil.

It's tricky, they sometimes even add it to random things like joints of Beef.

I get my meat from a local independent butcher so that is unlikely with the meat I get from him, but as you say if they add it to all sorts of unrelated products it does slip though the filters. Though can people be allergic to palm oil? It is made from nuts so could be allergenic. In which case are they warning people of the risk?

Especially when they hide it, using names like cocoa butter equivalent or cocoa butter substitute. I think there are even more names, and yet an even longer list of alternative names when use in non-foodstuffs.

All things in moderation.
Eat whatever you want, just less of it if it's bad for you.
People need to learn portion control.

Im still waiting for NICE to call for the ban of BBQ's and smoked meat due to all those nasty nitrosamines and PAH's.

That will just encourage the use of smoke flavour.
