Water and salt water, why the need for nuclear? You need water in nuclear reactors, why not just ditch that? What we need is a better capacity to store power, that could then be the backup.

Yes that would be a better option. I was just thinking of extreme conditions like this spring. Windmills might have be inoperative because of the cold. Solar would have be variable at best though as long as they were not covered by snow they could still operate at reduced efficiency. Though if combined with high levels of efficiency to reduce demand that may not have been a problem. What ever we do we will need alternatives for a while. Though if we had a high carbon tax on all fossil fuel power plants it would encourage the use of renewables, even osmosis.
