Sony has released a Firmware update on PS3 that appears to be its first on-console step to block hacking software such as PSJailbreak.
Software update 3.42 includes "additional security features", according to Sony.
The platform holder calls the upgrade a "minor update". It requires 168MB of free space on the PS3 HDD.
Early consumer reports suggest that it has rendered recent PS3 hacks unusable. Underneath a posting of the news on the SCEA blog, PS3 users are speculating what it means for PSJailbreak.
One consumer wrote: 'Oh, come now. At least be honest about the update. We all know it's the first of an expected hundred-plus firmware updates to block the Jailbreak.
'Now you'll be doing these every day like with the PSP instead of actually taking the time to give us updates we actually need or working on making the system/service better. You know it's never gonna end, right? Firmware update, gets cracked, firmware update, gets cracked, awesome.'
Reports suggesting that Sony was able to detect the PSJailbreak - and was set to solve the issue with a Firmware update - first emerged last month.
The firm has managed to get a PSJailbreak USB banned at retail in Australia.

useful update would be nice if I'm gonna be annoyed the next time I switch the PS3 on...
