Yes but what is to stop the US from using drugs to fund their own dirty little wars? I take the whole concept that our troops as aiding and abetting the enemy as laughable.

Believe it or not, but not every soldier is a copper-bottomed honest-to-goodness nice guy. Historically there's always been trade in contraband during wars, this is nothing new, except the proceeds from these soldiers could potentially be financing the enemy war effort, if it's the case that the opium/heroin they're moving is ultimately on the behalf of the Taleban.
Not such a world changing perspective shift, is it?

Yes I fully accept that not all troops are perfect. Yes contraband is brought back. Ask many old soldiers if they brought back a memento of a war that they were in, and I suspect that the answer would be a resounding yes. Also the amounts of drugs involved would not be material to the overall funding of the Taliban. The drugs could come from a region not controlled or influenced by the Taliban, such as around Kabul. That would exclude any benefit to the Taliban at all. If that were the case it would be fulfilling demand for opiates in the UK without funding the Taliban, thereby depriving them of funds. That is not aiding the enemy. Smuggling yes but not aiding the enemy.

The inferrence there would be 'it's ok to be contributing to the funding only a little bit.'

Could. Could. Then again, they might not. How certain can Brer Soldier be about who's further up the supply chain?

It's all supposition - all I'm saying is that these silly boys could have landed themselves in a very bad place all because they want to supplement their income with a spot of international drug trafficking.

I totally agree on that point. All rather stupid if you ask me.
