Worldwide PS2 sales matched those of PSP in the three months ended September 30.

Both systems recorded falling hardware and software sales, although the PlayStation division was given a boost by PS3 cost reductions and improved sales.

PS2 and PSP sales during the quarter totalled 1.5 million units apiece, the latter down 50 per cent year-over-year.

PSP software sales declined from 13 million to 11 million units, while the drop was more severe for PS2 games, with sales down from 11.4 million to 5.6 million units.

PS2 turned ten-years-old in the US this week, and while Sony's focus has clearly switched to PS3, it recently announced a new PS2 bundle featuring Toy Story 3.

PSP's performance must be more concerning for the company. Launched in late 2004, Sony's efforts to revitalise the business with the release PSPgo last year have been largely ineffective.

A survey recently named PSP the UK's most returned gadget. While not officially announced yet, stories regarding PSP2 have been emerging thick and fast over the last few weeks.

Even with it's mad price, I expect the 3DS to wipe the floor with the PSP2 somehow... And God only knows what Sony will think is an acceptable price for the PSP2
