The only thing I've used my optical drive for recently is playing a CD.
I don't understand how you're to get your music in to your iTunes Library if there's no CD/DVD drive.

I'm sure Apple would prefer it if you bought it from their online music store.

You could buy a superdrive (providing they unlock the firmware on it to make it work with the MBP).

Or you could just nip to PCsRus and buy any old USB dvd drive for about 30 quid. Since 10.5, pretty much any USB dvd drive will work on a Mac no problem.

I mean, how does any other netbook owner rip CDs and DVDs?

I don't know.
I do know the MBA can share a drive from another computer, but if you're getting a MBP and it's your main machine I guess some sort of USB/FW/ExpressCard solution is the way forward.

Except they'll probably drop the expresscard & FW.

Damnit USB wins

How much do you have to move? Can't you fob it or transfer it over a network?

I haven't used a Mac for about 5+ years so I'm not sure what they can/can't do.

Chortle. Upon visiting TUAW, I'm asked if I'd like to update Silverlight.

Anyway, pure speculation. Wait and see, wait and see, as always.

I know the story has been debunked, but:

Apple have started putting the OS on a thumb drive, other optical media could follow.
Light Peak/USB 3.0 could replace current I/O.
The Internet is getting faster and ever cheaper, so download/transfer stuff across it.
If you use a laptop as your current main machine, don't get a new MBP? Everyone else who has some other computer could probably share the drive over the network...

I confess I had to click on the link, as "MBP" meant absolutely nothing to me.
