Virgin Media has released a teaser photo of its forthcoming TiVo-powered set-top box – including a glimpse at the remote control that the next-generation offering will be coming with.

The company has already outlined certain details of its new box – including the fact that it will have a modem built in – and has now shown off a picture of the box, albeit masked by a sheet.

Why is TiVo superior to any other PVR software? Is it really any better than Sky+ et al? :?

That said I do prefer VM over Sky - VM's catch-up TV service is par excellence, not to mention cable broadband...

The 'trick' TiVo has'had is it's essentially 'smart'; it uses programme metadata to suggest things to you as well as just recording what you tell it to. So if you tell it to record three shows that are all scifi, it will look through the schedule for other scifi and say 'would you like me to record this show as well'? Which can be kind of useful. It was also always quite easy to get recorded stuff off aTiVo before although I can't imagine Virgin will make that easy this time round.

Ah OK, fair enough then. I've seen it talked about at length on many American TV programmes but was never aware of why it was lauded so.

I think it can also do the "Smart stuff" with actors - so if you like say Clint Eastwood it will automatically record anyhting with him in it
