PlayStation 3 users will be able to watch shows such as Coronation Street and The Inbetweeners, after ITV and Channel 4 revealed they will make their online catch-up services available through the games console. Access to ITV Player and 4oD is expected to be made available to PlayStation 3 users this week. The two broadcasters are following in the footsteps of the BBC, which has already made its iPlayer catch-up service available through the games console. According to Sony there are four million PS3s in use in the UK, and 80 percent of those are used to access online TV and film services such as iPlayer or LoveFilm. Until now, ITV Player has only been available online and through Virgin Media's TV service and BT Vision. "There is a compelling story to tell about the PS3 that goes far beyond gaming," Allan Duncan, marketing director for PlayStation in the UK, told The Guardian. "It is about changing people's attitudes to the PS3 as a platform, to view it as a much broader entertainment device." http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.c ... That's awesome news. I hate watching catch up stuff on a computer, being able to watch it on my telly will mean I can actually use the service. Bandwidth permitting!

I have a £130 Atom PC plugged into the TV. If I hadn't wall mounted the telly, then the PC would actually screw onto the VESA mount behind it. It does everything I need from an entertainment system, including games, Youtube, general Internet, iPlayer and 4oD. It has a wireless keyboard and mouse, a web cam for video messaging from the comfort of my sofa, a dance mat for DDR and vibrating attachments for cyber-sex. Why would I spend even more money on a PS3 when a PC is a fraction the price, quieter, more reliable, more discrete and does so much more?

"Because you might want to play PS3 games" seems the obvious answer. If you dont want to then dont buy one. But then I dont think anyone is suggesting you should? I used to find it so useful having 4oD and ITV on the BT Vision box. I'd love it to be incorporated into the Freesat HD box.

Err, well I got one because its a bluray player as well and, err, oh yeah, you can play frickin' games on it. Good ones. I only rarely use it for watching catchup stuff but I see that as a bonus. As for noise, I never hear mine. Well, I would do if I turned the sound off.

Meant to post here the other day... What do you lot make of the services? UTV player's what we get (ITV), and it's barely watchable, with bad audio syncing and incredibly low-res video 4od is a lot better, though the PS3 browser makes it a nightmare if you accidentally click on one of the ads...

The ITV player slots adverts in to programmes. The ads are separate streams. However, they got inserted a minute before the designated slots in the programme, cutting people off mid sentence.

That will be the problem for most people.
