Mobile phone providers will have to offer 12 month contracts under new EU rules.
Contracts of 18 or 24 months are often the only choice for consumers who want the latest mobile phone. The rise in popularity of smartphones has seen a growth in contract lengths.
But these lock customers into long-running costly contracts and if they want to escape the contract they must pay the entire remainder of the deal, potentially more than £1,000

For example, Tesco Mobile is currently the only online mobile phone provider that offers a 12 month contract on the iPhone 4.

Under the proposals all providers would be obliged to offer a contract length of 12 months on all mobile phones.

I remember when all mobile contract were twelve months long. There was no such thing as 18/24 months one in my day. [/old man]
You also got a large discount if you paid up front for the contract and then just got billed for the calls. Vodafone stopped doing that in about 2002 (ish).

I'd hate to think what the monthly price would be on high end phones. After all the networks aren't going to subsidise them anymore than they do now, probably less as they'll be guaranteed less phone calls.

Exactly, you might get a 12 month contract but pay through the nose for the handset. As it stands although 24 months is a long time I was happy to go for it on the basis I got the handset of my choice without any initial outlay.

I also remember though when there was no such thing as 18/24 month contracts. Then when handsets got a bit fancy we were 'forced' to go to 18 months. Then they got fancier still and were up to 24 months. Maybe when the iPhone10 comes out we'll be signing up for life!

Personally I would rather pay a lump sum up front with lower monthly payments / shorter contact than be locked into a 24 month contract

I have always bought my phone and just gone with a SIM only deal - generally cheaper in the long run

I believe that my iPhone has worked out cheaper on PAYG than it would have done on contract.

I feel the same. I am looking at a iPhone 5 now. The white iPhone 4 has taken too long. The Tesco deal is actually quiet good. The upfront cost is higher but the call package can be lower. Though I am considering the £35 monthly contract. For another £40 a year I get considerably more calls which could be very useful. Certainly more than I need, but for only a few pounds extra per month.

There's to be changes to their tariffs soon, Google it if it makes any difference to you or someone you know :|

I am going to go for Tesco but if the deal is not great I might get a new phone from Apple and get a SIM or PAYG deal from somewhere. The Tesco deal is sweetened with triple points on the top up.
