Technical problems have pushed the launch of internet TV service YouView back until next year.

YouView, a web TV joint venture between BT, the BBC and five other media companies was expected to launch this summer, but as we reported last month, the consortium is facing delays due to technical problems and in-fighting between the project members over costs.

Now the venture has admitted the problems will push the launch back until 2012, although YouView said it hoped to launch a pilot this year and defended the decision to wait until the service was running smoothly.

YouView said it would soon publish the core technical specifications for launch, adding that the consortium endured significant technical tinkering and industry negotiation to push through a TV platform based on common standards.

“Our focus has always been to deliver a product to consumers that is right, but not rushed,” said Richard Halton, CEO of YouView.

"Creating a truly open TV platform that will bring consumers increased choice has required significant technological innovation. Our timings for the launch reflect the scale and complexity of this project.”
