Many professions do actually. Sis in law is an optician (or optometrist, to be honest I switch off... anyway) and she has to retake a relatively straightforward exam each year to 'prove her competence to practice'. They have to pay to have that exam marked.

Yes but such deductions are tax deductible and a requirement of many trade professions. Accountants have to pay similar subscriptions. Though opticians, accountants, lawyers and doctors earn considerably more than a constable.

I would image that a Constable could pay for all the necessary licenses.
