just finished a huge row with my mother about the right to privacy.
I have to limit conversations with my mum, she reads the Fail and can't understand why people always mock it...
My mum say that restricting the freedom of the press is "the thin end of the wedge". Trouble is that she can't understand that sometimes wedges have two edges. Apparently everyone should live as thought everything is public anyway.
I, however, may have gone a little too far by asking if she thought the Stasi were a good thing. Oh and mentioning Telescreens as well.

Why not just build smaller "local" power stations, that way you'd need fewer pylons. you could build them next to landfill sites and combine them with a recycling plant to sort out all the combustible waste, plus methane from the stuff already buried.
Would smaller stations not be more inefficient?
Not really - if you build a small station you can include all the heat recycling gear to cut down the losses, and by reducing the length of HV cable, you reduce transmission losses as well. If it's close to business/homes, you can also use waste hot water for heating.
I'm all for local power generation. Sadly, a lot of people are not keen on having the rubbish they create being burned close to their homes. I find that attitude very short sighted, but typical of the Greater Spotted Nimby.
