Apparently, NoW targeted the families of 9/11 victims.

Quote:
But he [Murdoch] flew straight into another storm as it was claimed 9/11 victims may have had their mobiles tapped by News of the World reporters. And there was more bad news when it was revealed nine reporters allegedly at the centre of the phone scandal and claims of police corruption could face jail, along with three officers.

Well the US will not like that. James Murdoch looks like he will go to jail in the states. It could mean big problems for Murdoch if they deem him to be unsuitable for ownership of Fox TV.

If those allegations are true, then the USA will clearly go not just for those directly responsible in the news room, but for the names at the top. 9/11 is a particularly sensitive date for the Americans, and the 10th anniversary is coming up soon.

We have a very one-sided extradition arrangement with the USA too. They will use that with all their might.

I doubt that we get a peep out of anyone protesting this extradition.

They won't need push it too hard, I suspect. Rupert Murdoch is an American citizen and can therefore be repatriated simply at the request of the US government (usually be production of a warrant). What's the betting James is too?

Unless they attempt to claim political asylum .

James Murdoch is a UK citizen.

Apparently not, according to a statement by an MP I've just heard. He (didn't catch the name sadly) is a member of the Select Committee on Media, Culture and Sport who have apparently invited Rebekah Brooks, James Murdoch and Rupert Murdoch to appear before them next week. The reporter asked if the committee had right to enforce attendance and the MP said they did for British citizens but as neither Murdoch was a British citizen it didn't apply to them.

James Murdoch's wikipedia entry doesn't include reference to his citizenship or his place of birth. However none of the references to his early life listed there are related to places in the UK.

Ah, here's the quote, courtesy of The Daily Telegraph's live feed by John Whittingdale, member for Maldon :-

Quote:
I thought there was a strong chance that Rebekah Brooks would appear, as she is a British citizen and we do have powers to compel British citizens. But of course the Murdochs are not. I think it's a measure of how serious this is for News International that they have accepted this. I think it's the first sensible thing they've done.
