Truth be told I can't remember where the 1% thing came from, let alone whether my source was credible (or if it's just something I misunderstood when someone explained it in a pub). I was under the impression though that if you start with X amount of electricity, and convert that to hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis (of normal quite cold water), and then converted it back, you would receive less than X/100 of electricity as an end product.

If you did it at home with stuff you had laying around, that's probably true. For some reason it's a commonly touted perpetual motion system, so it's wiser to under-estimate than believe you can break the laws of thermodynamics.

That is one advantage of renewables. Local power generation, will mean lower transmission losses.
