+1, and I'm in a trade union.

Ditto

If we all ignore him, he'll go away

When you see what he said in context on the One Show, he was being satirical. He initially said he agreed with the strike and what it stood for, and then said "as this is the BBC we have to be balanced and impartial, so I think all strikers should be shot ..." and so on. Taken out of context, a red rag to a bull and engineered to garner complaints and knee-jerk reactions.

I can't believe such a big deal has been made out of it. People complain about the most pointless of things and then just let slide important things they should complain about.

Clarkson is also very critical of the BBC’s compliance procedures. He’s not the only one, Chris Evans has also criticised it, saying
Quote:
"Sometimes you come up with an idea and the compliance... is so great that you just say, 'let's not bother'."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13639039

Stephen Fry has also criticised the BBC’s climate of fear:
Quote:
"I do know of so many cases where executives would say 'What we want is something new, something different, something extraordinary!'

"And they're brought something new, different and extraordinary and immediately the executive gets cold feet, falls back on something else and we end up with something incredibly bland."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11200974

And Armando Iannucci also
Quote:
frets more about BBC executives' ability "to turn themselves into a police station even when they haven't committed a crime" under the slightest pressure from tabloid critics – although he is shrewd enough not to get drawn into complaining about any over-zealous culture of compliance.

So there is criticism about it from various angles, and from various areas of entertainment. Clarkson’s protest is far more brutal. He said what he said knowing full well that the compliance brigade can’t do a thing about it. I bet ’s pretty frustrated in having to junk ideas for Top Gear because of these procedures.
