Anyway, I'd suggest we need a proper framework for the laws that are already there, and guidelines for public servants that are backed up by those laws. No more senior officers covering up aspects of murder and child abuse inquiries

What we need is a fully independent press body that can regulate the press and fine them significantly in the case of serious breaches. There needs to be compensation for the average person who is libelled and does not have the resources to right those wrongs. The celebs can always sue as they have the money.

As for public workers such as police men who take bribes for info the law needs to be so draconian that the press and police are never as close again. There will be times such as the Megan Stammers where the police rightly have reason to contact the press but there should not be a trickle of mis information to the press such as during the terror raids which meant citizens were labelled as terrorists, when it was the police trying to muddy the waters and cover up their incompetences. Journalists need to operate to the same standard as in the US where there needs to be two independent witnesses before they print.

IMO they don't need politicians to rule the press, they just need much tougher sentences for those who break the rules.
