If they sold out then it wasn't too expensive. It's obviously not penniless teenagers going to see them any more!

I imagine £299 wasn't the cheapest seats.

I hope everyone has fun. I'm quite a big fan of some of their stuff, but I'd only go to see them if I had a time machine. They did still sound pretty good the last live stuff I've seen though, I'm just a bit ageist when it comes to wrinkly rockers rocking against the clock.

No, they're not...

Irrespective of the relevance or entertainment value of the Rolling Stones these days, I fail to see how anyone can contemplate spending that kind of money on tickets to a gig. For the same price you could go and see 30 to an infinite number of new bands who will be far hungrier and willing to but on a great show, where you can get up close and personal rather than observing a handful of small figures on distant video screens.

By way of comparison, I went to see Stones' contemporaries, The Pretty Things (guitarist Dick Taylor played bass before Bill Wyman replaced him) at a local venue last week. I'm not big on nostalgia trips in music, but they're a band I've been a fan of for almost 40 years, and up 'til now I'd never got to see them play, so I was prepared to make an exception. Tickets were a most reasonable £17.00 The venue was a decent size, but still small enough for us to get down to the front and be standing a couple of feet away from the band. I was a little bit disappointed when it became obvious to they weren't going to be playing anything post 1968 (but understandable given the line-up), but for the most part they were highly entertaining and genuinely appreciative of the audience.

Afterwards I even got a chance to have an interesting conversation with Phil May (the singer), where he revealed that if he could persuade to other three members of the "classic" line-up out of retirement, they would be back to tour the SF Sorrow and Parachute albums in their entirety! What are the chances of even glimpsing a Stone off-stage?

IMO this is what gigs should be. Small intimate and sweaty nights to remember. If you want comfort, stay at home and watch them on DVD.

I agree. Going to live shows, I went through a progression of going to smaller venues as time went on. First gig was AC/DC at Wembley Arena and then bands like Metallica at Hammersmith Odeon then venues like the Astoria/Astoria 2, London Garage. If you want to feel part of a gig rather than just an observer you really have to go for the smaller venues. Mind you, this can bring you within range of stagedivers!

Not always some venues have very low stages. It takes a lot of effort to get up to height to stage dive. Not as easy as simply launching off from a high stage. I do prefer small venues. I have been to some really small venues for acts like Blancmange and you get to drink with the acts afterwards.

The tickets are now sold out so even if you have £299 you are too late to get a ticket.

Do people still stage dive?

TBH most of the gigs I go to (or play at), you're lucky if the stage is more than knee-height. Most of the time it's an area of the venue marked out by the presence of amps and speakers and little else...

Only idiots.


That is my experience especially in pubs. Some pubs the stage is only six inches high. Those are really tough to stage dive from. Plus they are short so no run up either.

Of course stuff like that rarely stops our singer...
