Would you consider flashing it with 'droid? (I seem to recall people tinkering). I appreciate your mum possibly doesn't care :)

Correct on both counts. I would do it if I hadn't bought myself a Nexus 7 and given that away

I'm considering risking my Desire HD with an unofficial upgrade, but I'll be stuck with my old Nokia dumb phone if it goes wrong! It's not nice being stuck on Gingerbread - again, a lot of websites don't work like they do on the newer Androids. At least all my apps and iplayer still work though. Bloody thing is only a couple of years old

The iPlayer app on various platforms doesn't use flash. If you go to iPlayer through a browser, I think it still enforces flash unless you have some way of stopping it like ClickToFlash.

Ah, on my phone it switches to a mobile version which works on my iPhone (ie without flash).

Why do people go along with the idea that as soon as a device stops getting system updates then it is 'obsolete' or 'outdated'? It isn't, it's still as useful as it was the day before the end-of-life announcement was made, just it's probably not going to get any more useful in the future.

Indeed. Every penny I earn is made on a G5 using cs3 and textwrangler.

I will upgrade, but it's not like it's completely necessary yet.

I keep my older computers to play older games that will not work on the latest OS and hardware. My thoughts are to keep this phone until it gives up the ghost which could be many years away. I also have bought a few accessories for it so really do not want to have to spend a fortune replacing them as well.

I think the original iPhone stopped getting upgrades with either version 3 or 4... Heck the original iPad was chucked on the scrap heap in little over a year.

More fool you if you threw it away. I still use mine every day.

Why do people go along with the idea that as soon as a device stops getting system updates then it is 'obsolete' or 'outdated'? It isn't, it's still as useful as it was the day before the end-of-life announcement was made, just it's probably not going to get any more useful in the future. if it wasn't useful to you before that, why the hell did you buy it? Apart from the obvious fact that if we applied the same criteria across the entire technology spectrum, there'd be entire generations of mobiles phones that were 'on the scrapheap' the day they left the factory, as they never received any sort of firmware or functionality update at all (and I'm not talking about phones from years ago either).

You're not required to replace or dispose of a device just because the company that made it wants you to buy their new one instead.

Defunct, maybe not, but as it isn't getting any further security patches, I wouldn't put it on a network...

One of my biggest problems with Android as well, it isn't anti-Apple.
