[quote="bobbdobbs"]If your going to buy a house the first thing is make sure you can afford it and at the end of your repayment schedule you own it.

Why is that exactly? What if I don't want to own it at the end? Paying just the interest is an alternative to renting. You own your house, you can make changes to it in any way you want and you get to benefit from the price appreciation.

If thats ok with you then thats fine but if its not what you want dont go bleating about how unfair etc for your failure to plan correctly when faced with a big bill at the end

But with the proviso that your plan is agreed with by your bank, and that you are subject to checks every so often.

Banks must take on the responsibility of lending to people who are good risks - ie those who can repay at the end of the loan. If your plan is to sell, will the market support that? If you have a savings plan, will that be enough?

What we don't want is another time bomb where the markets collapse due to poor lending decisions. Regardless of anyone's feelings that it's the individual who should self-audit, I feel that we've reaped the benefits of that kind of lax attitude and a more robust system of checking and monitoring is put in place.
