Yes but will the players be able and fit enough to do it? There are already enough problems trying to get some players for national team matches.

Jeepers. It's not as if the main football "season" doesn't last all year as it is. We're well into the cricket season, yet top sports headlines are still all about soccer. :|

I expect they'll be able to sustain it with hype and licensing alone if they can just get it off the ground.

Thousands and thousands of hours of football, each more climactic than the last! Constant, dizzying, twenty-four hour, yearlong, endless football! Every kick of it massively mattering to someone, presumably. Watch it all, all here, all the time, forever, it will never stop, the football is officially going on forever! It will never be finally decided who has won the football! There is still everything to play for, and forever to play it in! Watch the Football! Keep Looking at the Football! It's Going to Move.

There already are football club tournaments in the summer, The Emirates cup for example. Nobody cares about them because they don't matter. Murdoch may set up some summer shindig for his sports channels to fill the hours but he can't make people care about it the way they care about the FA Cup or Champions League. It may sell some rights to Asia or wherever, but it'll take place at mostly empty stadiums featuring tepid matches played by players who really would much rather be on some beach somewhere.

It probably will happen but it will last a couple of years then quietly die, the way the IPL is starting to go and that A1 GP series did. Sports fans know when a trophy means something and when it doesn't. And they'll know this doesn't.

As to football being bigger news than cricket, wait 'til The Ashes starts...
