Which one do you have? As I said, the original one, with the hard drive, cannot be put to sleep. The Stand-by option in the menu only turns off the video card, it doesn't put the whole device into stand-by.

I have the first 1080p version. It might be the second generation version. It is a year old there is no hard drive in it.

Then you have the third or fourth generation Apple TV. Mine is from 2010 and has a hard drive, so you can actually store music and videos on it, so you don't have to have the Mac turned on.

Thanks for clearing up that. All I know is what it can do and 1080p playback was the clincher for me. As for what version I had no idea.

on or off totally or stanby where it "listens" for the phrase xbox on. see above response approx 1/3 of xbox 360 owners have a kinect But of course no publisher knows who actually has a kinect and would you want to possibly put off 2/3's of the user base with your new "blockbuster" COD:Hamster incursion or fifa 2999. Im not saying MS approach is the right one but I can see where it makes sense on the game fron, plus the other features that make xbox one totality. The issue is the "always on" aspect of what MS are pushing, add i the tinfoil hat brigade and you have the clusterf*ck of loads of people who cant or wont understand the power of the on/off switch or FTFM.

The fact that the Kinect can be turned off is good, which allays my fears about it. As you said by making it a feature of the console far more games will now include Kinect features, that is good for everyone. Publishers will know that there will be a sizeable market for the game rather than the 1/3 of consoles as of now. It will also allow the game to be sold cheaper which is good for the customer. The problem is that Microsoft really did not understand the customer and so really screwed up. If they actually took time to survey their users they would have stopped all development of such ideas much earlier and would not have walked into a [LIFTED] storm over this. No one objects to DRM that is unobtrusive. I am more than happy to put disks into the console every time I play a game. As long as the disk is genuine the publishers should be happy that they have customers willing to play their games and use genuine disks only. If I were to sell the game I expect to lose the ability to play the game again. Many are more than happy with that and will then sell on the game. Microsoft thought that they were powerful enough to impose new terms on customers and that has backfired spectacularly. I wonder how much this overall has tarnished the value of the Microsoft brand?

The problem is Microsoft stating that the One must be on all the time, or at least that is what all the news stories that I've read say. There is never a mention of the on/off switch, just that it must be on all the time.

MS have been pushing the always on as it fits into their image of the console being the hub of the room and it allows you to say xbox on etc. This gets reported as you "must" have it on at all times or die... Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I can fully appreciate that they want it to be the centre of our entertainment, but they are late to the idea. Customers possibly have cable or satellite boxes, possibly another console or two even. Then TIVO or a PVR of some sort, and that is before you add a Roko or Apple TV and not forgetting DVD's or Blu-rays. The voice control may have been a good feature that would have been useful once you use it, but the impression was that it had to be on even if you were watching TV or not even home.
