But only a very small minority of people driving at high speeds are people in Porsches or Ferraris. The majority are driving VW, Kia, Peugeot, Toyota, Ford, Opel etc. The price of fuel is not something they can really ignore, but the rush of driving "faster" that the Porsche or whatever they just blew past gets them.

Yes but then that makes them fools. I am happier driving at higher speeds when the motorway is clear, but when there are more cars I will be happy to just coast along. Though I prefer to drive at odd hours when the roads are clear. Last time I left London at 1 am and then arrived home around 4 am, spent an hour or more in the supermarket doing some shopping as well.

I'm glad they've dropped it

Owning an old 5 speed 'family' car the difference for me between 70 and 80 would be pretty high in terms of fuel economy reductions
The limit is just that, a limit, not a goal.
You do not have to go 80 if that's the limit.

Of course, driving to conditions etc but it's more than that, the difference between lane 1 and lane 3 on a motorway would be 30mph+ (assuming those that do 80 now to 90 if the increase came in) that difference is pretty bad when the drivers don't drive well as it is

I have seen drivers treating the middle lane as a 60 mph limit lane. As long as they do not enter the outside overtaking lane it should avoid many of those types of problems. Though many simply do not check the lane is clear before entering it.
