I think many people of that era had as varied a career probably because they were not as specialised as they are now. My dad started as an apprentice in BSA with some one who went on to be a movie star, before going into the RAF, then hotels and then packaging. Many of his friends did various careers as well. I think that many jobs are very specialised now so people stick within the industry most of the time.
