Wasn't Vista this expensive when it came out?
Doesn't it cost the Mac lot about £80 for an OS upgrade?

No, Vista Ultimate retail was over £200 when it came out. OEM was £70 - £160 or more. I felt it was worth the money though after XP, but 7 is just dreadful and £50 is too much.

Well I may well get it. I have stuck with XP for some time now, never went to Vista and as always built my own PC’s just moved my copy of XP from on pc to the next
XP has been a good workhorse but there will be a time to change.
The only issue is do I pre order a copy (when it come to the UK) if the price is right or wait until my next build – probably at the end of this year / early next year and then install it
After all assuming W7 lasts 5 years i.e. before the next change, then it’s priced reasonably compared to a game or something similar

The lack of the upgrade is an inevitable consequence of letting US lobbyists form EU competition policy.
Nobody with a brain could conceive that removing IE from Windows would genuinely enhance competition, and fortunately for SUN, IBM et al nobody with a brain runs Europe's Competition Polizia. Can you image the Yanks letting a bunch of foreign companies force stupid rules through over there? I thought not .
Instead of constantly piddling around with MS (name me a genuine benefit of the EC's vendetta) an investigation of various other US firms' pricing policies might not go amiss, and would save European consumers billions...

We side-stepped everything after Windows 2000, and both of us quite like Windows 7 from the RC we're using. Only complaint so far is using it on a home network platform, but there may be a way around the issues.
I don't mind paying for it, I like what I've seen so far.

£80!! Considering I have to do a full re-install on both laptop and PC regardless of whether I keep Win 7 or not, I think I may just go back to Vista. There's just not enough of a difference to warrant £80, there's just not - esp. since I have the Ultimate version of Vista on the desktop and would have to pay £80 to "downgrade" to Home Premium.
