I worked in the kitchen of a pub, and apart from one birthday party, I never drank any alcohol on the premises.

If you're doing bar work as a teenager you can't afford to drive anyway. Insurance is far too expensive to actually own a car

I certainly see a case for having a Zero alcohol limit, although if it's good enough for young people then it should be good enough for everyone and that's a slightly different debate. There is also, in my opinion, a good case for additional training after passing the test - driving safely at night, in wet slippery conditions and on motorways being prime examples. There's also an argument to be had for gaining experience in a different environment from the one you learned in - if you did most of your learning in towns and cities you're not necessarily very well prepared to drive safely in the countryside and vice versa.

I used to have the occasional drink behind the bar. Though my driving days and working behind the bar never overlapped. I would either walk to the bar, use public transport or cycle.

There really should be the current test then restrictions until you've passed something like the pass plus which would then allow you to drive on motorways and at night. I did the IAM advanced test and it's made me a much better driver due to the extra training you get and skills you learn.

What would be better is regular tests to make sure that drivers do not forget what they learned. It also seems that they concentrate on making it much harder for new drivers but do so little to get the incompetent off the road. Make everyone do a retest every ten years unless there is a fatality or hit and run when it should be immediately.

What he meant is the pay behind the bar is relatively low and there is a large weighting as it is seen as a 'high risk' occupation by insurance companies.

Here there are a minimum number of night driving hours and motorway hours that you need to do, before you can take your test.

Yes but the managers can describe themselves as company directors if they put the pub into company. The difference in insurance is immense. As for staff most could not afford it unless they had a second job. Many bar staff that I knew with cars had full time jobs and bar work was an additional job.
