At the beginning of World War II, a government pamphlet led to a massive cull of British pets. As many as 750,000 British pets were killed in just one week. This little-discussed moment of panic is explored in a new book.

The cull came as the result of a public information campaign that caused an extraordinary reaction among anxious Britons.

Tragic, but nothing compared to what followed.

The Germans never had enough trucks in WWII, and what they did have were always breaking down because half of them were stolen form the Poles and Czechs and there was no standard platform so they always ran out of spare parts. In consequence they had over a million horses dragging their supplies, and the infantry had to walk a lot. I don't think the horses enjoyed the eastern front any more than the men did.

Yes my mistake. I was thinking of the numbers of British horses so there could be millions more from the other countries.

Amazing. Of all the fraudulent statistics you have put online, this is the one you choose to walk back? The one where you finally underestimated some unpleasantness.
