This was what the NSA were up to. The fact that our security forces also spied on innocent people is more appalling. Even during the height of the IRA bombing campaign it was estimated that the active number of terrorists was less than a couple of hundred. Even now I suspect that the numbers of active muslim terrorists is less than that. If they actually found out what sites were problematic and that turned people into fanatics and then tracked all users of those sites it might be more acceptable to the public.

We always ignore the fact that GCHQ and the NSA were consulted by the Guardian about what they could and couldn't print from these sources. Everything published so far has been cleared by the very people who are now complaining about their publication.

Article on the history of various government's claims that the release of secret information will harm national security

Summary : There is no conclusive evidence that any post WWII public release of sensitive information has led to a single member of the intelligence community being harmed or significantly enhanced any terrorist attack. There is a lot of evidence of MI*/GCHQ/US and UK governments using the laws related to suppressing disclosure of sensitive information to prevent them being embarrassed or possibly subject to prosecution.

Damaged national security? More like it has damaged their credibility by showing how out of control they are.

I think you're correct. It's been a long and a little frustrating day.
