http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24553611Seems to be a better report than most as they go, but I can't help thinking targeting the pensioners will become a sideshow.

Targeting the pensioners will not raise that much plus they have also been the victims of the governments zero interest rate policy. They have lost hundreds of millions in interest that they would have had in a more normal environment.
It does show that the government has been spinning the lie that work is a route out of poverty. It is only going to get worse.

It's a fact that pensioners have done better recently than other recipients of state money, and that in many cases this is not productive. In terms of getting the most advantage from our welfare budget, we should be targeting need, not likelihood of voting.
Unfortunately, all the parties are aware of this imbalance, and there are people within each who are willing to talk bout it, but none of their leaders seems to be very brave. I think that's pathetic because old people aren't thieves. Most of them are deeply concerned about the welfare of grandchildren etc, and those who have little need for a free tv licence or winter fuel allowance are more than likely willing to part with those so that the cash can be diverted to where it will do more good.
