Each to their own. From my perspective I would say Lou Reed authored some of the most interesting music of the 20th Century. You two thought Richard Matheson was a legend when he died, but I consider him a minor celebrity in a niche genre.

I think some context may be useful. Simple example : I have only ever heard two songs Lou Reed wrote and they are the obvious two. There are several generations who, despite being told how influential he was, can see no point at which the music they enjoy derives in any way from the music he wrote.
So when they are told he's died and how sorry they should be about it, their immediate reaction is "why?" He's no more relevant to them than Mozart or Fats Domino.
This is not to denigrate or belittle Reed as an artist or the love people have for him; it's simply an acknowledgement that most artists, even great ones, have their time and once their time is past, people who grow up later simply don't share the love.
Reed's death is sad in the way any death is sad but not feeling any sense of personal loss over it is not in any way wrong.

Many of those expressing dismay at Lou Reed's death may be of a similar generation to him. He was 71, which is no age these days. His best work was in the 60s and 70s, so his contemporaries will be feeling their age, and their children will be realising they are mortal after all.
I discovered Reed's work quite late. Some of it is not to my taste, but there are some tracks he recorded which certainly hit the spot for me. I am saddened at his death, but no more so than other famous people I have grown up with.

As I mentioned before, each to his own. It just surprises me that of all the candidates we have had, it would be Lou Reed who got the Who Dat? treatment.

I'm 58. Lou blew me away - ever since someone thrust the Velvet's album into my spotty teenage paws at a local fete for 50p. You won't believe it, but 'twas I suggested "Perfect Day" when asked at a very well known London agency - so you can blame me if you need to, the rest is history.... Deep Respect... R.I.P. robin
