A driving license is not a right

So youd rather sentance someone to a prison term and reduce their rights to a bare minimum rather than a sentance that has a lesser impact on them and society but still allows them to be a functional member of society whilst giving a real impact to them of their actions. I know which one is more likely to lead to less offending. Strange priorities there?

I'd rather have a sentence that can be applied to everybody equally, not just those who have have a license. Especially if it's not for an offence that involves that license (ie driving offences).

Taking away someones driving privileges does not mean that they will be a productive part of society. If you need to lock people up have over night prisons so they can be punished and still maintain their job. If they do not work and you opt to take away their license they actually become more detached from society. Recidivism is not down to whether people have a driving license. Criminals are already at the margin and never consider the outcomes, that is why they commit the crime in the first place. Also removing a license could end up being a lifetime punishment rather than the few weeks inside that a custodial sentence would impose, as they may never retake the test or get their license back. Also will further marginalising someone via stripping them effectively permanently of the right to drive actually benefit society? Also most criminals realise the impact of the crimes when arrested and barely consider it afterwards, it happened and they want to get on with their lives where ever that may be.

The removal of the licence would normally be a few months at most, and as it isn't a repeat drink driving offence, then they don't need to retake their test. The public transport and cycle ways here are also very good, so driving is a luxury for most people.

The fact that it is automatically returned is good, but I can see our government taking to the next level. The problem is that if driving is a luxury in Germany then is it really a punishment if many people cannot afford to drive, let alone worry about staying legal with a licence. What could happen is that people will simply drive without a licence and if they have an accident then eventually you will have to sent them to gaol for driving without a licence, as well.

Public transport in Germany is probably considerably better than it is here, that makes it workable. If you did that here many people would be stuck at home for the duration.

Aren't non custodial sentencing options usually granted by the court at request of the convict? Adding new options to the mix (including your weekend prisons) surely just creates a healthier smorgasbord of punitive responses.

If you don't have a licence, you can't insure the car, if you don't insure, you don't get a registration plate. If you stop paying or your insurance is stopped, they send a collector round to remove the number plate.

Not having a plate would not stop some people. Though if you lose your license to they remove your number plates automatically?

Not sure, if it is a family (shared) car, then probably not. But people driving without a licence doesn't seem to be a problem over here. It has certainly never come up in any of the motoring shows, cop shows or news.

Uninsured drivers are a bit of a problem here. Not sure how much it has improved or deteriorated over the years.
