A fridge has been discovered sending out spam after a web attack managed to compromise smart gadgets.

The fridge was one of more than 100,000 devices used to take part in the spam campaign.

Uncovered by security firm Proofpoint the attack compromised computers, home routers, media PCs and smart TV sets.

The attack is believed to be one of the first to exploit the lax security on devices that are part of the "internet of things".

And, it seems, if you have a compromised device, there’s little you can do to clear up the infection.

How about disconnecting your fridge from your wifi/lan?
I would never connect mine up in the first place, even if it did have that feature.

Or that someone had left the door open? ;)

Not really I suspect that they would all assume that another member of the family would have closed it. ;)

What every fridge needs is a web cam inside so you can tell that the light is out when the door is closed. It’s vitally important that you can do this from your desk whilst at work.

Have you thought that through? ;) There must be millions who get something out of the fridge naked or in very little. Great for those watching the webcam but not for those that get the midnight nibbles.

I had wondered why I kept getting emails asking me to bring eggs and cola with me, when I come home.

I'd be more impressed if the fridges just started ordering lots of stuff. Every day.

What's the point of hacking a smart fridge if you aren't going to troll the owners a little bit?

Imagine getting the email:
"I noticed you were low on cheese, so I ordered 4 Kilos for you.

Forget an internet connected fridge, if I were the manufacturers, I'd make a talking fridge.
Then I'd make it just as annoying as Talkie Toaster, just for the fun of it.

Many people do not trust their partners with a credit card, and you want the fridge to get one? ;)
