In fact, I'd argue it's actually less democratic than a simple majority Tory government. If the Tories were in power on their own and the Lib dems were technically in opposition, they'd vote according to their own whims and those of the people who vote for them. Because they're 'in a coalition', they patently feel obliged to vote for certain tory policies they'd object to in opposition - basically they're subject to Tory three line whips. So on a number of occasions they're effectively increasing the tory majority by the number of MPs they have, when the people who voted lib dem almost certainly wouldn't be in favour of those policies.

Maybe. But I'm sure they'd have done a lot more, more quickly if they were a majoroty governement.

See my above post. I can only think of one tory policy that hasn't been enacted because the lib-dems said they wouldn't vote for it. They've been effectively no brake on tory policy at all.

Germany has had 4 years of majority rule since 1949 - they don't seem to be doing too badly.

That's because the first thing they did was make a coalition agreement where both sides flung their non starters overboard. The stuff both sides openly disagree about, all the snubbed policies, is all theatre for the next election.

Yes but when it comes to election reform they always mention Italy, and their record of coalitions.
