Way to misreport, this is even more inaccurate than the Guardian report on the Microsoft.
They introduced this a year or so ago and most people have been using it anyway, but you could disable it, now they are forcing an https connection.
This has nothing to do with encrypting the emails, this is just encrypting thru page you are looking at, so that it cannot be snooped on in an open wifi spot or in a company network, for example.
